Consumer Reports was founded in 1936 and is a trusted nonprofit that works side-by-side with consumers to create a marketplace that is fairer, safer, and healthier. We are a growing development team with a goal of deepening philanthropic partnerships to support the organization's social mission and its new strategic plan.

We're an unusual nonprofit because over 80% of operating revenue is earned from subscriptions. Our colleagues in direct mail and digital marketing have built a donor base of 600,000+ drawn from a pool of 7 million paying customers—subscribers to Consumer Reports magazine and Consumer Reports Digital. Our donors come from every part of the country—we are a truly national organization.

The Associate Director, Principal and Major Gifts will focus on developing relationships with high-net worth philanthropists to secure six-, seven- and eight-figure gifts in support of Consumer Reports, the country's largest consumer champion. The successful candidate will be a results-oriented fundraiser and excellent communicator who can inspire donors and prospects. The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial and external-facing and will help to ensure that CR's philanthropic partners have an outstanding experience with the organization. The position reports to the Director, Individual Giving and works closely with the Vice President, Development.

Our donors and funders trust us to provide independent information to consumers that is free from corporate influence and that is based on science and data. They want us to make sure that nonpartisan policies and regulations put consumers first. And, whether they are interested in food, health, home and tech, cars, or money, our donors use CR to help them make smarter choices in the marketplace.

This Role:

  • Develops creative and thoughtful strategies to build and manage a portfolio of individual prospects and donors with the capacity to make six-, seven- and eight- figure leadership gifts.

  • Interacts with prospects and donors directly, acquiring deep knowledge of prospects' interests and motivations, supported by the team's prospect researcher, to move prospects through the stages of identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation.

  • Plans, produces, and delivers highly customized and sophisticated communications, including proposals, acknowledgements, and reports.

  • Strategically involves senior leadership, board, and program colleagues in cultivation and solicitation activities. Briefs and coaches senior leadership, board, and program staff ahead of donor and prospect interactions.

  • In partnership with the CR development team, focuses donor-centric efforts on upgrading current CR contributors who are identified to have the capacity to give six-, seven- and eight- figure leadership gifts.

  • Acquires a deep knowledge of Consumer Reports' work, including research, testing, content, policy and mobilization. Articulates mission, value proposition, and strategic initiatives, including the priority areas of privacy, food safety, health, tech/homes, cars, and money.

  • Works collaboratively with internal stakeholders including testing, content, policy and mobilization, marketing, communications, finance, legal, and HR to ensure fundraising strategy and leadership/major gift opportunities are aligned with internal operations and priorities.

  • Works with Vice President, Development and colleagues across the institution to champion donor-focused information that recognizes donors and inspires others to give so that it is included in CRs' print, online, and social media communications. Thinks creatively about raising the profile of Consumer Reports philanthropic opportunities to target audiences and among philanthropic advisors and other networks.

  • Ensures that donor and prospect interactions are accurately recorded in the organization's constituent management system and that gifts are acknowledged appropriately and expeditiously.

  • Stewards donors so that they have a first-class experience with Consumer Reports and are inspired to speak highly of the organization and reinvest in its work.

  • Works with Vice President, Development to build a culture of philanthropy and leadership gift fundraising at Consumer Reports.

  • Maintains high ethical standards and employs fundraising best practices to achieve results and maintain the integrity of Consumer Reports. Contributes to the development team's success and evolution with an optimistic and forward-looking approach; models high professional standards and a results-driven mindset.

  • Evaluates the impact of individual giving and continuously seeks to improve and strengthen fundraising results and institutional success.

  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree or professional certification preferred.
  • At least eight years of fundraising experience.
  • Proven track record in achieving significant philanthropic revenue and developing long-term relationships with individual philanthropists and their advisors and staff.
  • Exemplary communication skills with the ability to generate sophisticated and compelling narratives and to convey complex ideas clearly for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience in fundraising for research, policy, advocacy and consumer issues a plus.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with a proven track record of contributing to or implementing fundraising plans.
  • Requires an estimated 35% travel for donor meetings
